BREWERTON, N.Y. – When the CRSA Sprints returned to Brewerton Speedway, this was a race Zach Sobotka had to take advantage of to get the points lead, especially with experience as a past Sportsman track champion.
Mission accomplished for the No. 38.
Sobotka held off Jordan Hutton and Johnny Smith in the late stages to score his fourth win of 2025 at “The D-Shaped Dirt Demon” and not only take the points lead up 36 on Dillon Paddock, but also clinch the I-90 Pit Stop Challenge.
"It was an exciting 25 laps," said Sobotka. "Lost the lead and retook the lead. I was set up to roll around the bottom, but didn’t expect it to be on the top."
Vince Chicklets and Sobotka brought the field to Tyler Groescup’s green for 25 laps. Chicklets led the opening lap, but Sobotka grabbed the lead afterward.
After a yellow for a Darryl Ruggles spin, on the restart, Sobotka had company from Johnny Smith as “The Firecracker Kid” took the lead with six laps complete. Smith would hold it for four laps, then a red flag for Tyler Graves flipping in turn two after tangling with Ron Greek.
Sobotka took the race lead back from Smith on lap 10 and started to pull away.
Championship implications took a turn for the worse for his championship rival, Dillon Paddock, after he caught the wall in turn while battling for seventh with around 10 to go, flipping his No. 8 and walking away.
In the final laps, seventh starting Jordan Hutton had his No. 66 coming to life, passing Smith for second coming to six to go. He would begin to swap spots with Sobotka, but the No. 38 was scored first at the line each time.
It came down to the twin checkers as lapped traffic played a significant factor on the last lap, with Sobotka winning by a half-second.
“Those red flags were challenging,” Sobotka said. “Glad we got to take the top.”
Hutton and his No. 66 team have continued to find improvement in the second half of the year with four top fives in the last five races. From the win at Outlaw to the fourth at Woodhull, they’ve discovered speed and are ready to pounce going into September.
In the team’s first race since last month at Thunder Mountain, Johnny Smith rounded out the podium. The performance gives Smith three top fives in his previous four races, adding on to his fourth at Fulton and his win last June at Thunder Mountain.
Scott Landers took home the Elab Smokers Boutique Scramble Dash, winning $100 courtesy of Elab.
Ron Greek won the next wave of the Loyalty Giveaway, a Triple X chassis. We thank him for being a big supporter of the CRSA Sprints.
The Ruggles World of Autobody & Graphics Hard Luck award went to Tyler Graves after his flip early in the feature.
Jeff Trombley was the Powdertech Powdercoating Hard Charger recipient, gaining 11 spots to finish fourth.
31 drivers checked in Friday night.
"The Future Stars of Sprint Cars" take Labor Day weekend off, then return Sept. 5 and 6 at Ransomville Speedway and Weedsport Speedway. The two races will be the final events that pay out full points to the overall championship.
Action can be seen live on Dirt Track Digest TV and DIRTVision, respectively.
