(VAN ETTEN, NY) – A local teacher has used his skills on the racetrack to help motivate his students in the classroom. For one fourth grade class at Spencer-Van Etten Elementary School, their teacher has displayed both commitment to education and excellence on the racetrack.

Thursday morning as Kyle Pierce was helping his students practice math problems, representatives from the CRSA Sprints presented him with the Peak Automotive Performer of the Month award. The award, as featured in the national publication Speedway Illustrated Magazine, was presented to Pierce to recognize his participation in sprint car racing to teach his class about life lessons and making good decisions.

"It's really cool to be recognized to be able to just share with other people, to see what more of a day-to-day life is away from the racetrack," said Kyle Pierce, a teacher at Spencer-Van Etten Elementary School.

Pierce has been racing since he was six years old, and over time he's worked is way up from slingshots to sprint cars. He developed an interest in teaching through opportunities to observe classes already in action.

"I connected with my third grade teacher that was I this building, Mrs. Harris. She let me come back as a senior and I worked probably three or four times in her room. I came over for a full school day. That's what kind of sparked me and I like working with the kids, that seemed like a good career option," added Pierce, whose father also taught in the public school system and actively races sprint cars.

The 2021 CRSA Rookie of the Year and five-time 305 sprint race winner has often garnered support from his students, who enjoy watching their teacher compete in person. After his races, Pierce uses moments from his time on-track to teach about adversity and making smart decisions in life.

When Kyle hits the track, it can be a family affair. His father Cliff still races alongside him at various races on tour. It shows that any night at the racetrack can be a memorable one for Kyle, his family, and of course his students.

Attention will now turn to honoring drivers and teams at the annual awards banquet on Saturday December 2 at Vernon Downs Hotel & Casino. More information is forthcoming on event details including times and event accommodations. Those wishing to make reservations early be sure to mention CRSA or Mike Emhof Motorsports for special lodging pricing.
